BATTER-UP is a clinical study for adults diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The goal of the study is to determine if researchers can find a way to predict if a specific person with rheumatoid arthritis will be helped by anti-TNF (anti-tumor necrosis factor) medications, like Remicade®, Enbrel®, Humira®, Cimzia® and Simponi®. Anti-TNF medications only work well in about half of people with rheumatoid arthritis, but it is unknown why.
There are currently no laboratory tests or other ways to predict how well anti-TNF medications will work for each individual. BATTER-UP's study aim is to develop a test that could help doctors know whether or not to prescribe anti-TNF medication for specific patients.
You must be 18 years old or older and diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis by your doctor to participate in this study. Your doctor must decide that you are in need of starting an anti-TNF medication or need to switch to a new anti-TNF medication.
Approximately 1000 persons diagnosed with active rheumatoid arthritis will be enrolled across the U.S. Up to 700 will be starting treatment with an anti-TNF medication for the first time and up to 300 will be switching from their first anti-TNF medication to a second anti-TNF medication because their first medication did not work well enough.
